How Much Luggage Can I Bring?
Traveling with Busbud means connecting with hundreds of bus, train, and ferry operators worldwide. Since each carrier sets its own rules regarding weight, size, and extra bags, it is important to verify the specific policy for your trip.
Where to find your specific allowance
Luggage policies differ by carrier and route. To check your specific limits, follow these steps:
During Booking: Review the luggage policy displayed on the trip selection screen before you pay.
After Purchase: Sign in to your Busbud Account or check your confirmation email. Click on "Details" to see the full terms and conditions for your ticket.
On the Ticket: Your PDF ticket often contains a breakdown of permitted bags.
Standard Luggage Allowance
While every company is different, most operators follow these general guidelines:
Carry-on: 1 item allowed per passenger (approx. 5–8 kg / 11–17 lbs). This must fit under your seat or in the overhead rack.
Hold Luggage: 1 bag stored in the baggage hold (approx. 20–23 kg / 44–50 lbs). Maximum dimensions generally apply (usually 158 cm total height + width + depth).
Extra or Oversized Luggage
If you need to bring more than the standard allowance:
Additional Bags: Most companies charge a fee for extra bags at the station. Space is limited and extra luggage is not always guaranteed.
Special Items: Policies for bicycles, musical instruments, and sports equipment vary greatly. Some carriers require pre-approval or an extra fee, while others may not allow them at all.
Pets: Always check the specific operator policy before booking, as many carriers have strict rules regarding pet travel.
Important Travel Tips
Label Everything: Ensure all bags have a tag with your name and contact information.
Arrive Early: If you have extra or oversized luggage, arrive at the station at least 30–45 minutes early to allow for check-in and payment of any fees.
Verify with the Operator: If your luggage is unique or very heavy, we recommend contacting the bus company directly to confirm they can accommodate you.
